Margarida Lemos is ais a Portuguese illustrator and graphic designer based in Oporto, Portugal. After spending some time in the advertising area she has now turned her attention to drawing.
(All artists have to answer the same 10 questions.)
1. First and Last Name
2. Where are you from? And where are you currently living?
I’m from Oporto, Portugal, where I’m currently living.
3. What’s your main influences?
I’ve always been very interested in the duality of things. The limit between the real/unreal, pretty/ugly, good or bad, these are the subjects I find myself thinking and exploring the most. That comes from everyday life, people and situations I find. Travelling, music, and cinema are a great source of inspiration too.
4. How was your path until this moment? How did you start?
I guess it all started when I was a kid, watching my father painting, I remember I used to “finish” his work, sneaking and painting all the backgrounds and white spaces with really vivid colours.
Growing up I stopped drawing regularly but kept studying arts. I took a communication design degree, where I didn’t draw much, but in the last year I had an illustration class and drawing started to grow on me again.
Then I went to Barcelona for an editorial design specialization, there I started to draw a lot, and wondering if I could do that for a living.
Meanwhile, I started working as a graphic designer in fields like music, fashion, and advertisement but I was not satisfied, so one day I decided to take the risk. I got a part-time job and illustration/drawing classes in Oporto Fine Art School, as I felt very insecure because of the years without drawing. And that led me to where I am now. I started to show my work on social media and things started to happen.

5. Where do you see yourself next?
Still trying to figure that out.
6. Knowing what you know now, what would be your advice for people in the same area?
If this is really what you want to do, take the risk, work a lot, and be persistent.
(..)take the risk
