Alex Gee is a motion designer and illustrator from Australia, currently living in Toronto. His style is very unique and the black and white tone adds to it marvelously.

(All artists have to answer the same 10 questions.)

1. First and Last Name
Alex Gee

2. Where are you from? And where are you currently living?
I’m originally from Brisbane in Australia, but I’ve been living in Toronto since late last year.

3. What’s your main influences?
I’ve always loved music and find that records I’ve been listening to make their way into my projects. Cat Power’s Moon Pix is a major influence on my recent work and inspired me to pick up a guitar after years of wishing I could play an instrument.

Aside from music, for the moment I’m inspired mostly by Toronto and the shared experience of living abroad with my partner Pamela.

4. How was your path until this moment? How did you start?
I first got interested in filmmaking in high school but quickly realised I was better suited to animation than film directing. After a couple of years at a technical college, I enrolled at the Queensland College of Art and graduated with my debut short film Apotheosis three years later.

I got my first job as a motion designer at Breeder, where I worked for five years before moving to Canada and ‘going freelance’, as they say.

5. Where do you see yourself next?
I get anxious if I think too long about the future, so for the moment, I’m focused more on where I am than where I’m going. I feel very lucky to have reached a place in my career where I can take time off when I need it, and so I’m trying to protect that time and not take it for granted.

I’m focused more on where I am than where I’m going.

6. Knowing what you know now, what would be your advice for people in the same area?
Saying no to something you don’t want is saying yes to something you do.
